Cusco
The smartest base for a short Machu Picchu trip: altitude-aware pacing, station logistics, and practical neighborhoods for first-time Peru visitors.
🗓 Best time to visit: April–October for clearer skies; November–March is greener with higher rain risk
Overview
If you only have around a week in Peru, Cusco is where trips either feel smooth or fall apart.
Most short-trip mistakes happen here: landing and pushing too hard at altitude, booking the wrong station transfer, or underestimating return timing from Machu Picchu.

What makes Cusco tricky (and how to avoid problems)
- Altitude is real: Cusco sits around 3,400m / 11,150 ft. Plan your first day as a light adaptation day.
- Machu Picchu routing is fragmented: train departures use different stations (Poroy, Ollantaytambo), and transfer times matter.
- Weather swings: mornings can be cool and sunny, with rain arriving fast in shoulder/wet months.
- Tour timing pressure: many people squeeze too much into one or two days and lose buffer.
Best neighborhoods to stay
1) Centro Histórico (first-timer convenience)
Walkable to many restaurants, agencies, and landmarks. Great for short stays, but expect noise and stairs.
2) San Blas (charming + quieter vibe)
Better for cafés and slower evenings. Pretty streets, but uphill walks can feel tougher at altitude.
3) Wanchaq / around Av. El Sol (practical transit zone)
Less postcard atmosphere, more straightforward for transport, groceries, and calmer sleep.
3-night Cusco structure for short Peru trips
Night 1: Arrive + recover
- Gentle walk only, early meal, hydrate
- Avoid heavy exertion and alcohol first night
Night 2: City + logistics lock-in
- Sacsayhuamán or city sites at an easy pace
- Reconfirm train/bus entry tickets for Machu Picchu segment
Night 3: Sacred Valley or pre-Machu Picchu positioning
- Move toward Ollantaytambo if taking an early train
- Keep the evening low-effort

Typical day budget (single traveler)
- Lean: $45–80/day (hostel private or simple guesthouse + menu lunch + shared transit)
- Moderate: $90–170/day (3-star hotel + mixed dining + taxis for timing)
- Comfort: $220+/day
Mistakes that cost people their Machu Picchu day
- Booking train/entry combinations with no margin for delays.
- Assuming all trains leave from central Cusco.
- Planning same-day return to Lima right after Machu Picchu.
- Ignoring altitude symptoms instead of reducing pace.
